What's your idea of a perfect body? If it's a lean, sculpted, strong body then boxing will likely get you the results you're after. Boxing is one of the most popular workouts among celebs. How do you think the Victoria's Secret Angels keep their amazing shape? Adriana Lima shed her pregnancy weight and was back on the runway eight weeks later.
In addition to helping your reach your fitness goals, the benefits of boxing go far beyond the one-two punch of high-intensity cardio and strength training. It develops focused discipline, increases self-esteem and provides stress relief.
David Jetter, owner and trainer at Underground Boxing and Fitness, can attest to this with over thirty years of combative sports and fitness training under his belt. His highly focused personal training regiment JetterBox® delivers a powerful jab—shredding pounds, building endurance and whipping bodies into tip top shape. David's clients often refer to Jetterbox® as a fitness addiction.
David took his gloves off long enough to tell us more about himself and his increasingly popular program.
You’ve been involved in a wide variety of sports from track to basketball. What drew your interest to boxing and mixed martial arts?
I wanted my athleticism to be well-rounded. I also liked the discipline and its ability to make me a better person.
When and where did you start training?
I started training in Stamford at the age of 12-13.
Bruce Lee, Muhammad Ali, John Harris and Johnny Rice–former boxing trainers.
Tell us about your background in personal training…
I have been training clients in Westport and Fairfield for over ten years. I opened Underground Boxing and Fitness about four and a half years ago.
What is your ultimate vision for the gym?
My vision is to expand to a facility that can accommodate 200-500 members and run my (soon-to-be established) non-profit (T.O.Y.A.R.) Transformation Of Youth At Risk.
Tell us about JetterBox…
I developed JetterBox about ten years ago. I saw a growing need for a diverse program that would help my clients successfully meet their fitness goals and personalized achievements. JetterBox training works well in either group or one-on-one training.
What sets JetterBox apart from other workout programs?
JetterBox was specifically designed as a diverse method of training to lose weight, develop lean muscle, and increase and/or develop agility. It increases reflexes, flexibility, stability, cardiovascular, muscle endurance, hand/eye coordination, and core strength. Other benefits include increased self-esteem, discipline, respect for self and others.
This program is used for athletic conditioning, it helps women with bone density, and stimulates mental development. The JetterBox combination of exercises with muscle confusion is like no other training. My clients refer to it as a fitness addiction.
Tell us about your non-profit program…
I am in the process of changing my youth program over to a non-profit called T.O.Y.A.R. which stands for Transformation Of Youth At Risk. The program works with children from the ages of 8-16 and is dedicated to eliminating the contributing factors of youth at risk through the discipline of boxing. It has been a key to tool to prevent and deal with bullying, youth suicide, gang violence, teen pregnancy, drugs, high school dropouts, low self esteem, domestic adversity, parental incarceration, and destructive generational cycles.
I have had over thirty students come through the program. It's very rewarding to be able to influence today's youth in a positive way.
